Strengthening Bidfood’s Market Position in the Pub Sector

The Challenge

Bidfood wanted to understand its current standing in the UK pub & bar market and how it compared to key competitors, including insight into:

  • How pubs perceived strengths and weaknesses of their offer, service and proposition
  • What drove customers to choose or switch wholesalers
  • How their service, range, and relationships aligned with customer needs

They also aimed to uncover what operators valued most, from product quality and delivery reliability to training, technology, and sustainability support, to identify how Bidfood could evolve its offer and maintain a competitive edge.

Our Approach

To explore these questions in depth, we conducted a series of one-on-one interviews with senior decision-makers across major pub & bar groups and two online focus groups with independent publicans. This mixed-method approach allowed us to capture both strategic group perspectives and on-the-ground operational realities, revealing the nuances in how Bidfood is perceived across different customer types and scales.

The insights provided Bidfood with a clear roadmap to strengthen customer relationships and refine its market positioning. Key outcomes included clarity on competitive advantage, identifying improvement opportunities and strategic direction for growth. These findings guided Bidfood on how to better support their clients and prospects key business goals, helping position Bidfood not just as a supplier, but as a strategic partner driving operators’ success.
