Calories And Other Foodie Points Of Note

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Good morning on trade folk,

There’s been much talk about “mandatory calorie labelling” in our industry of late. UK Hospitality’s Kate Nicholls has stated that the practice would stifle investment and create yet more unnecessary red tape. Personally, I agree- we can’t have a ‘one size fits all’ approach in such a diverse world.

However, we also need to be careful to understand what the consumer wants; and different consumers want different things. Our Generation Z report tells us that a whopping 87% of 18-24 year-olds want to see nutritional information available on menus in out of home eating establishments- but that’s not necessarily calories- in fact, they seem more concerned about dairy- with 9% choosing to cut it out- or gluten (6% choose to avoid), or a myriad of other things.

Whatever the truth is, we need to make sure we are talking to on trade retailers and customers to understand their needs.

In other news… the discounter Supermarket chain Lidl are looking to open a pub. Information on this left-field move is currently scant, but we asked the members of KAMunity, our online community of pub, bar and restaurant goers whether they would consider visiting a “Lidl” pub. 40% of the respondents told us they would. A timely reminder that when there’s financial uncertainly afoot, a value for money proposition will always be attractive to consumers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”4627″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Tonight I am down in Broadstairs in Kent, staying with friends for a couple of nights (and checking out a few of the local establishments, naturally!) before driving back to London for my most anticipated gig of the year- The Arctic Monkeys at The O2

Have a great weekend and thanks again for reading.
