Does calorie free mean taste free?

Good morning all

A couple of weeks ago at the UK Hospitality Golf Day, I was introduced to “Skinny Brands” and was surprised this week to receive a box of their lager and cider through the post to try. Now, eagle-eyed readers of this blog will know that I don’t drink beer as a general rule- but, for the sake of research, I gave this a go.

It ticks so many current trend boxes-

  • Gluten Free
  • Vegan
  • Low sugar
  • Low carb
  • Lower ABV
  • Lower calorie
  • Preservative free

But how important are the above features of “Skinny Brand” lager/cider? When we asked 2000 pub/bar goers earlier this week how concerned they were about the calorie content of lager, 9% told us they were VERY concerned, and 23% said they weren’t concerned at all. (NB- 38% didn’t drink lager)

And when we asked how appealing a lager brand that is less than 100 calories per bottle is- 16% of those questions said “very” and 11% said “not at all”.

But the big question is- “is it TASTE free?”

And, having sampled the cider last night, I can assure you it’s not- and Mr Katy promises me that the lager is a welcome addition to the fridge too.

This glorious weather has opened up opportunities for a lot of beer garden dwelling, which is what I intend to do tonight. Followed by a visit to Ken’s Beach Club , a little sun trap in central London, for cocktails and a catch up with friends. On Sunday I will be meeting my errant brother (the middle one) for lunch and a lecture.

Enjoy the sun, and have a fab weekend!

Katy
